What Is an SF6 Circuit Breaker
As an important guardian in medium and high-voltage power systems, SF6 gas circuit breakers are the core equipment for ensuring the safety of power stations and distribution systems. Its forte lies in quickly cutting off the current when there is a surge, insulation failure, or short circuit in the line.
Over a lifespan of more than 20 years, its actual operating time is often only a few minutes. It waits for the call in normal times and never fails when needed. We have optimized the sealing process and equipped it with an SF6 recovery device to reduce the impact of leakage.
Construction of SF6 Circuit Breaker

Arc Extinguishing Chamber
This is the heart that has cut off the current. Inside, the static contacts and the moving contacts work in coordination. When the arc burns, the SF6 gas decomposes and absorbs heat due to heat, quickly blowing out the arc. When you are choosing, check whether the contact material is wear-resistant and whether the nozzle design is reasonable. This directly affects the breaking capacity.
Operating Mechanism
Springs, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic systems are all common, but the key is to be stable. You can focus on how many tens of thousands of times the mechanical life is and whether it will become weak after long-term power-on.
Gas Systems and Density Detection
In the SF6 gas storage tank, it is cooled by circulating through pipelines. Density relay, real-time monitoring of pressure and temperature, will alarm if there is a leak. You need to make sure it has the function of automatic qi replenishment. Don’t wait until the pressure drops to stop the machine.
Insulating Support System
Porcelain sleeves or composite insulators support the conductive rods to block high voltages. Touch the outer shell to see if there are any cracks. On rainy days, check if the creepage distance is sufficient. This is related to whether one can withstand overvoltage.
Enclosure Structure
The metal casing seals all components to prevent dust and moisture from entering. Poor sealing causes gas to leak quickly, directly reducing the lifespan of the equipment.
SF6 Circuit Breaker Working Principle
When you issue the opening command, the operating mechanism drives the moving contact to pull back and separate it from the static contact. At this point, the current is still present, and the air between the contacts is broken through, generating an electric arc.
The high temperature of the electric arc causes the surrounding SF₆ gas to expand due to heat, and the pressure increases. High-pressure gas is ejected at high speed from the nozzle. At the same time, it takes away heat.
When closing the switch, the operating mechanism pushes the moving contact to re-adhere to the static contact. At this time, SF₆ gas remains on standby, ready for the next opening.
Types of SF6 Gas Circuit Breakers

Dead Tank
- The seismic resistance grade is also high.
- The volume is relatively large, so more SF6 gas needs to be filled.
Live Tank
- Compact as a whole and space-saving.
The Advantages of SF6 Circuit Breakers
No Need to Replenish or Replace the Gas
When SF6 extinguishes an arc, it decomposes to release a small amount of compounds. However, after the power is cut off, they will immediately resynthesize pure SF6 gas on their own. You don’t need to ventilate and replenish the material regularly.
It Occupies a Small Area
At the same voltage level, it is half the size of an oil circuit breaker and more compact than an air circuit breaker. If your factory building has limited space, SF6 circuit breakers are undoubtedly your best choice.
Long Service Life
By replacing the equipment twice less, not only can the procurement cost be saved, but also the losses from power outage renovations can be avoided. If you use it for a long time, the average cost is not high, and the quality can also be guaranteed.
Specifically Designed for Extreme Environments
On the plateau, air circuit breakers are prone to failing to open. If the humidity is high, oil circuit breakers are afraid of condensation. It is not afraid of these. In high-altitude, high-humidity, and even low-temperature environments, it can adapt and operate normally. If you’re thinking about buying circuit breakers, SF6 circuit breakers are a good choice.
Fast Arc Extinguishing
In the event of a short-circuit fault, it can cut off the current within tens of milliseconds, which is twice as fast as an oil circuit breaker. The motor and transformer on your equipment have been protected too many times
Accurate Operation
After the mechanical structure is simplified, there is rarely any jamming or delay. You don’t have to worry all the time about whether it can be closed this time when you are on inspection.
Low Maintenance Cost
Unlike oil circuit breakers that require oil filtration and oil change, air circuit breakers need dust cleaning and pressure measurement.
The Insulation Performance Is Exceptionally Strong
The insulation capacity of SF6 is three times that of air, and it can withstand a higher voltage in the same space. When you upgrade the system, you don’t need to expand the site. The flexibility is beyond question.
Wide Range of Applications
ZhongShao SF6 circuit breaker can be used from 35kV to 500kV, and is fully compatible with distribution rooms, power plants, and railway traction stations. You have a variety of projects on hand. One of them is enough.
Environmental Protection Risks Are Controllable
Its leakage rate is extremely low. Nowadays, there are also professional recycling devices. Compared with oil circuit breakers that leak oil and pollute the soil, it is actually more reassuring.
The Uses of SF6 Circuit Breakers
Medium and High Voltage Distribution Network
Medium and high-voltage distribution networks, with voltages ranging from 10kV to 35kV, often encounter short-circuit and overload faults. SF6 circuit breakers instantly cut off the current in case of faults, preventing transformers, underground cables, or substations from being affected. He can adapt to different voltage changes and can also stand firm in damp and dusty environments.
SF6 Circuit Breaker in Substation
It and other components enable flexible circuit switching and precise fault isolation. Whether it is an urban hub station or a substation in a remote area, it relies on its high insulation and strong arc-extinguishing capabilities to make the power grid dispatching more flexible.
Transformer Protection
Once a transformer malfunctions, it will affect a large area. SF6 circuit breakers can be installed in the high-voltage side incoming line cabinet of the high-voltage substation. Once there is a short circuit or abnormality inside the transformer, one should immediately use circuit breakers to prevent the fault from expanding. When you recommend it to customers, rapid isolation can also be a major selling point. It protects the transformer better than ordinary circuit breakers, which is its irreplaceable value.
High-voltage transmission line
When encountering lightning overvoltage or equipment aging faults, the current is cut off in milliseconds to prevent the entire line from being affected. It has strong weather resistance and a long maintenance cycle, helping you reduce the cost of power outage repairs.
Application of SF6 Circuit Breaker
Hospitals and Medical Institutions
Life support equipment here cannot stop for a moment. SF6 circuit breakers, with their outstanding breaking capacity and long-term maintenance-free feature. It can provide almost continuous power to the operating room, ICU, radiology department, and other areas. It can cut off the fault current in milliseconds to avoid the paralysis of the entire power network.
Office Buildings and Commercial Complexes
Elevators, data centers, lighting, air conditioning…All these places need a steady supply of electricity. The SF6 circuit breaker has a compact structure and stable performance, making it suitable for handling complex building distribution networks. It responds quickly to overloads, minimizes the failure result, and ensures a comfortable office environment.
Industrial Plants and Facilities
Once the power is cut off, the production line, large motors, and control systems will suffer huge losses. In the event of a fault at a certain link, the SF6 circuit breaker can quickly cut off to protect other areas from being affected.
Agriculture and Farm
Modern farms cannot do without stable electricity for irrigation, pumping stations, temperature-controlled greenhouses, feed processing, and cold chain storage. SF6 circuit breakers can effectively deal with possible voltage instability in rural power grids.
Municipal and Public Utilities
The signal systems of waterworks, sewage treatment plants, transportation hubs, public lighting, and so on are all related to people’s livelihoods. SF6 circuit breakers, with their high reliability and long service life, have become reliable gatekeepers in municipal power grids. It supports every moment of the city’s daily operation.
The Design Principles of SF6 Circuit Breakers

Rated Current
No matter how large the current fluctuations in your equipment are, our circuit breakers can withstand them. When designing, we just make sure the temperature of the current-carrying components (such as conductive rods and contacts) is strictly controlled within the safety threshold. Under long-term full-load operation, the shell will not become abnormally hot.
Rated Short-Circuit Breaking Capacity
When a short-circuit fault occurs suddenly, the circuit breaker must instantly cut off the fault current as high as 25kA, 40kA, or even 63kA. To this end, we strengthened the structure of the arc extinguishing chamber and utilized the highly efficient insulating and arc-extinguishing properties of SF6 gas to establish a strong arc cooling channel within just a few milliseconds. Every piece of equipment you see has undergone extreme current breaking tests before leaving the factory to ensure that it will never fail in the power grid.
Voltage and Insulation
We adopt a multi-barrier design, supplemented with enhanced insulators at key parts to ensure the long-term stable operation of the equipment at the nominal voltage level, leaving no chance for flashover.
Re-Breakdown Control
When disconnecting no-load lines or capacitor banks, a tiny current can easily cause arc reignition. By precisely calculating the contact separation speed and the distribution of the SF6 gas flow field, we have reduced the probability of re-breakdown to nearly zero. This means that when you switch on or off reactive power compensation equipment, you will not encounter dangerous voltage superposition surges.
Mechanical Durability
We select high-strength alloy materials and self-lubricating transmission, the mechanical life easily reaches 2,000 to 10,000 cycles (depending on the model). The gearbox is sealed and dust-proof, and the spring preload is long-lasting, significantly reducing the frequency of your on-site maintenance.
Breaking Speed
From receiving the opening command to complete disconnection, the entire process only takes 40 to 60 milliseconds.
Operation Sequence
For special working conditions such as reclosing, we preset standardized operations. Such as high-speed reclosing mode: open (O) → Close after 0.3 seconds (C) → Open again after 3 minutes (O) → reclose immediately (C).
All-Scenario Breaking Capability
Whether it is terminal short circuits, transformer excitation inrush currents, or long-distance cable capacitive currents, our circuit breakers achieve safe breaking through differentiated breaking solutions. For example, when cutting the capacitor current, a special nozzle structure is activated to suppress reignition.
Choosing our SF6 circuit breaker means choosing a visible sense of security. From materials to structures, from laboratory data to on-site practical results, every design detail points to the same goal: Looking forward to being a silent yet powerful guardian in your power system.
SF6 Circuit Breakers vs Other Circuit Breakers
SF6 Circuit Breaker vs Air Circuit Breaker(ACB)
ACB’s initial purchase price is indeed lower, but at the same voltage level, the enclosure volume is much larger than SF₆, and more than 30% more installation space needs to be reserved. Moreover, it has weak arc tolerance. When a short circuit occurs, the internal components are prone to erosion, and the frequency of later maintenance is high. If your venue is tight or you are seeking long-term maintenance-free services, this might be a drawback.
SF6 Circuit Breaker vs. Oil Circuit Breaker(OCB)
OCB performs very stably in medium-voltage fields (such as 10kV-35kV) and has a lifespan of over 20 years. However, it is afraid of frequently switching on and off large currents. If the margin is not left enough during the selection process or the contact wear check is overlooked during daily inspections, it is very likely to fail suddenly. If there is a lot of inrush current in your project, you need to pay extra attention to the maintenance rhythm.
SF6 Circuit Breaker vs Vacuum Circuit Breaker(VCB)
The old model is still in use, but maintaining it is really a hassle. The oil needs to be changed and impurities removed every year, which incurs high labor costs. What is even more troublesome is the risk of oil leakage. The compliance cost of oil pollution treatment is increasing year by year, and environmental protection inspections are also stricter. Nowadays, new projects are basically not recommended, unless they are renovations of existing assets and the budget is extremely tight.
- Safety: It is colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and non-flammable. The density of steam is five times that of air. Even if it leaks, it will gather and not disperse, making it safer.
- Strong insulation: With an extremely high dielectric strength, it can operate stably even in strong electric fields. It is much more reliable than ordinary gases in high-pressure scenarios.
- The arc is extinguished and regenerated: When switching, as soon as the arc emerges, it goes out immediately. After going out, it can regain its insulation by itself and will not deteriorate even after repeated use.
- Fast heat dissipation: At high temperatures, heat conduction is fast, and heat dissipates quickly. The equipment is less likely to heat up and has a longer lifespan
- Detection of moisture contamination: If it exceeds the standard value, immediately evacuate the air and dry it
- Check for corrosion of insulating components: Observe whether the porcelain sleeve and insulating pull rod have discoloration or cracks.
- Keep an eye on the control lever and the circuit breaker: Manually open and close a few times. If there is any jamming or abnormal noise, it means the parts are loose.
- Maintenance: Apply special grease to the movable joints. Replace worn gaskets and contacts in a timely manner.
Although SF6 itself is non-toxic, the by-products generated when it malfunctions are extremely harmful to human health. You can first evacuate the circuit breaker to a vacuum environment. This is the key to preventing leakage. When operating, special protective equipment must be worn, and best practices must be strictly followed. The most important thing is to prevent SF6 from being discharged into the atmosphere. It is a potent greenhouse gas. The gas must be safely recovered or purified using emission-free treatment equipment.
It’s not difficult. You just need to remember a few simple steps: First, make sure there is no abnormality with the equipment and check that the barometer is within the normal range; When operating, press the open and close buttons on the panel gently. Look at the indicator lights during the process. The green light indicates the conjunction and the red light indicates the fraction, making it clear at a glance. When we designed it, we simplified the operation to the most convenient process, just to prevent you from finding it troublesome. We will also provide you with an operation manual for free.
